Ian is a chipper, easy-to-get along kid. He is always eager to make friends and trying new things. He likes playing games and also sports, just like most kid his age. He is also enthusiastic (sometimes overly so) about stuffs he likes. He is a generally positive person too. It takes a lot to get him annoyed, but when he does get annoyed, he'll sulk and will stay so for an extended period of time; being uncooperative in general.

He is naive and innocent, also clueless to the extreme. Honesty is also one of his positive feature, but he'll just blurt everything in his mind, sometimes hurting someone's feeling in the process. He is also a bit of a crybaby, often crying because of simple matters such as sad movies or lost things.

Sometimes Ian shows a level of maturity more than kids his age should have, but those moments were extremely rare and far between.

As a baby, Ian, at that time nameless, was a illegitimate child born as a result of an affair. His real mother was sickly and poor, without any means to tend to Ian's live. Soon, his mother could not take the burden of this nameless baby and dumped him away. He was left alone to die. Luckily, he was picked up by a man and was later adopted. His name 'Ian' was given by his adopted parents.

His adoptive parents were a same-sex couple, so Ian grew up with a different concept of love, thinking that it was okay as long as you trust each other. This also contributed to his easy-going nature. Ian was more tolerable to differences and that what made Ian easy to befriend with.

Ian loved his family even though it was different than the ones his friends have, he thought his 'dads' were kind and they were very supportive of him (though sometimes they spoiled Ian a lot).

He met his Digimon Partner when he was 10, when a mysterious egg popped out from PC monitor. He found it and took care of it until it hatched, despite one of his dad's advice to just throw it away. He and his partner digimon quickly became friends. But Ian did not actually take their partnership very seriously. He liked his partner digimon as a playmate and that was it. He finally changed his mind when Guilmon protected him from an evil digimon, with a cost of Guilmon's left eye. From that time on, Ian learned the true meaning of 'friendship', the meaning protecting, supporting, and trusting each other. He promised his partner that he would become strong too, and would not considered him as just a 'playmate' but a 'partner'.

Guilmon was a virus-attribute digimon. Even though his personality was kinda different from other typical virus-type digimon. He was as playful and curious as Ian is and they made a nice combo.

Guilmon is also easily excitable, and will be safely preoccupied for hours if something caught his attention. Though after digivolving, Guilmon adopted a more serious personality. He trusts Ian and in battles, he let Ian act as his left eye.

His left eye is blind (that's why it's white in color) as a result of protecting Ian. Guilmon never regret that, but even now Ian still felt guilty about Guilmon's lost eyesight.
